When she woke the next morning, Katherine was alone. Disappointment hit her hard. During the night, she’d turned over and reached for Clay and he’d held her against his chest easing her fears that crept up from the past to clutch her when she slept. It was the last thing she expected to happen when she came back. Even in her state of half sleep she couldn’t help but gravitate to him. She was comforted and slept better than the night before. No nightmares, no night sweats. Just pure blissful sleep.

The door opened and Coco jumped on the bed with a tiny bark of welcome. Katherine held out a hand. She came closer for a pat.

“See she has you well and truly trained. Not bad for someone that claims not to like animals.”

Katherine smiled despite herself. “I know, right.”

The smell of coffee reached her nostrils and she suddenly craved it.

Clay put a mug on the night table and sat on the edge of the bed. “Coffee, nine o’clock on the side table.” He reached out and ruffled Coco’s fur. “I’m glad these ones have managed to get under your skin then. Todd was adamant that they come to you.”

Who would care for them when she went back, though. “Temporary, Clay. I can’t take any of them back to the city. I live in an apartment, remember.”

“Not anymore you don’t. You told me you had to give it up because you couldn’t afford to pay to leave it empty.”

“Did I? I don’t remember that.” So much had happened since she’d been here, she lost track.

“Your lawyer needed all the money you had and since this place was vacant and yours, you put your furniture in storage and let the apartment go. I do have that right, yes?”

He had a better memory than her. “Yeah, you do.” She reached out for the coffee and he put it in her hand, wrapping her fingers around hers before letting go.

“Just how much are they charging you?”

“Far too much.” She licked her lips. “But these are the best lawyers I could get. They’re known for winning cases. Big cases.”

“Is it worth it, Kate?”

He didn’t understand. “It’s my reputation on the line to say nothing of my future. Of course it’s worth it.”

“That’s not what I meant.” He paused. “Is it worth it to use the best lawyers when someone else would do the job for less money?”

“But these guys have the name, the reputation.”

“Sure, I get that. But if you’re strapped for cash, are they the best fit for you right now?”

He moved slightly as one of the cats landed on the bed and snuggled up against her legs. She tried not to react but it was difficult, especially not being able to see the animals.

“They said nasty things about me, Clay. Terrible things. They’ve ruined my reputation. I’ll never be able to hold my head up in town if I don’t sort this out.” She licked her lips. “I’m not a monster. I might be hard on my staff but it’s the only way to get results.
